Just a Theory

Nick has been having trouble with his eyes.  By the end of the day it's really hard for his eyes to focus.  He finally went to an eye doctor about it.  For the first time EVER the eye doctor explained what was going on with his eyes in a way that made sense to him.  Nick is far-sighted so he can see things far away but not close up.  That just seems weird to me!  His eyes are constantly working to focus to see the things close around him.  That leaves him with very tired, over-worked eyes.  That all makes sense and is nothing new.  But the doctor had an interesting theory...

In their discussing, Nick mentioned that he was a tad ADD (or more than a tad).  The eye Dr. said he has a theory about that.  He said on average about 70-80% of people he sees are near-sighted and only 20-30% are far-sighted.  He went on to say that he worked as the optometrist for a prison at one point and of the prisoners he saw, 70-80% were far-sighted and only 20-30% were near-sighted.  His theory is that people who are far-sighted act up because their eyes are bothering them (but they don't realize that is the underlying cause).  They tend to be labeled as "ADD/ADHD" or "problem children" and that's what they become.

Anyway, there are no scientific studies to back that up but it seems to make sense.  It's amazing to me how far off the percentages are from the general population to the prison population.  There has to be a correlation there.

So...this weekend hopefully we can find some frames he likes and order some glasses.
